The Great Ask — How to Talk Money & Boundaries with Your Family

A couple, dressed formally, walks hand in hand along a flower-lined path in a garden under a partly cloudy sky.

Wedding planning can stir up big emotions, especially when it comes to family. Navigating cultural traditions, managing financial input, or handling differing expectations can get complicated.

One of the most common dynamics we see is couples who want more independence in decision-making but are receiving financial support from parents or grandparents. If this is you, don’t panic. There’s a path forward—and it starts with clear, kind conversations.

Want Creative Freedom? Ask for a Set Budget

If family is helping financially, consider asking for a clear dollar amount rather than open-ended support. This gives you a sense of freedom and a framework for making confident decisions as a couple.

It’s totally OK to say:

  • “We’re so grateful you want to help — what amount feels comfortable for you?”
  • “We’d love to plan within a set budget, so we can manage the rest on our own.”

Clarity is your friend. And if Brene Brown taught us anything:
“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.”

Sample Scripts for Setting Boundaries (with Love)

Here are a few phrasing examples to help you approach family conversations with kindness and confidence:

Script 1: Asking for a Clear Budget
“I’m thrilled you want to support us! Would it be possible to know the amount you feel comfortable contributing? That way, we can plan accordingly and make decisions with more ease.”

Script 2: Seeking Creative Control
“I value your input, and I’m so glad you want to be involved. I also want to ensure the day reflects us. Would you be comfortable giving us a budget to work within? That would give us direction while still letting us lead the planning.”

Script 3: Blending Visions
“I want to honor your hopes while creating something that feels like ‘us.’ If I had my way, I’d love to focus on ________. Could we talk about expectations and what roles each of us might play in the planning process?”

The Big Picture

Weddings are emotional — they’re about legacy, family, identity, and the future. But at the end of the day, it’s still your celebration. You deserve to feel supported, respected, and empowered throughout the process.

And if you’re not sure where to start? That’s what we’re here for. We’re not just your venue — we’re your advocates for a celebration that feels like you.
